Hey guys, I know I have been slackin on my blogging. As I sit here on my laptop I have decided to make another entry into "My THoughts" Series. This one is about Drake, one of my favorite rappers since 2010.
The Canadian born rapper is, I think, the best rapper in YMCMB today. Yes I think Drake is clearly better than Lil Wayne at this point. Nicki Minaj is still really popular, but lets face it, she's very talented yet very limited.
Back to mr. Drake. Drake seems to rap about very personal things, which most rappers these days don't do. He raps about his mother, his uncle, his ex girl friends, more ex girl friends. One of Drake's quotes was that he only cares about, "Rappin and Bitches". Well I know you have to throw money in there also.
Let me rewind. Yes all the way back to 2009. When Drake first came out I didn't like him that much. I remember when my Drake playlist on my Ipod was a mere 4 songs! Yea now its over 60 easily. So what do I think now? Drake is just what hip hop needs at this point. He has a dope flow, and is very introspective.
He's changed from album to album. I'm not going to count So Far Gone since that was a an EP. His first album was loaded with guests. To be honest, they stole the spotlight quite a few times. Drake defined his style here as a singing rapper like yes, Ja Rule. In fact I feel Drake should pay a little homage to Ja as being the first singing rapper that was really popular. The 1st album was really good however.
His 2nd album, Take Care was far more versatile and personal. Again Drake had a pretty big guest list. This time he seemed more comfortable. However he still seemed to have some filler on the album. Regardless of the shortcomings, this album won a grammy.
His 3rd album, Nothing Was the Same is easily his best work to date. Drake doesn't rap in this super laid back tone all the time. Sometimes he raps with a lot of inflection in his voice, and it works well. The guests don't really steal the spotlight either.
Ok so where does Drake go from here? I honestly don't know what else he can talk about, having covered so much ground on each of his 3 albums. I think songs like Started From the Bottom showcase that he can make hits at will. Well thanks for reading.
