My Thoughts: The Good, The Bad, and the Elite rappers

Wassup yall. This is another My Thoughts blog. I might step on some toes with this blog post but im just gonna keep it 100 on this one. here is a list and breakdown of several rappers that are grouped into 3 categories: The good rappers, the bad rappers, and the elite rappers. No these aren't in order, but I put them in the categories that I feel they belong too.

The Good
Aite let's start with some good rappers in 2014. They are consistent and noteworthy.

  • Kendrick Lamar-He is one rapper that will likely be Elite before all is said and done. He is a great lyricist with a lot of creativity. One of the things about him that I really like is he has no GIMMICK. 50 was shot, Kanye had the accident....but with K Dot its just raw rappin.
  • Drake-I didn't like Drake when he first came out, but by mid 2010 I became a fan of Drake's. He is a singing rapper, who in my opinion is very similar to Ja Rule, but of course hes a better lyricist.
  • Kid Cudi-One of my favorite rappers. He is incredibly talented yet his subject matter limits him. This has been made clear over his past 2 solo albums. Hopefully KC will drop another dope album but will that put him in Elite Status?
  • Pusha T-No argument who is the better of the CLipse. Pusha has really stepped it up with his 2013 album.
  • Game-He may be one of my favorite rappers but its like he is going through a drought right now. However he has never released a bad album.
  • J.Cole-I think Cole is like Nas and Jay put together.....with a lil Game in there somewhere lol. Cole is a beast, and may be Elite one day.
  • T.I.-The king of the south is ALMOST ELITE, but not quite. He doesn't really have enough near classic albums to make the list but he will be there one day. Paper Trail and King: nuff said.
  • Ludacris-Once my favorite rapper, Luda has kinda fallen off in the last.....few years. I know he will return to supremacy though.
  • Tech N9ne-A new favorite of mine, Tech is a really good rapper....but he relies on horrorcore a lot which well....is his style.
  • Young Jeezy-As with Luda, he needs to drop another album but the snowman goes hard.

The Bad

These rappers aren't horrible but I feel they are not great for rap music today.
  • French Montana-I almost forgot about Mr. Montana. His debut was horrible. The album was actually unlistenable but I got through it somehow. Arguably the worst rapper still in mainstream today.
  • 2 Chainz- I like 2 CHAINZZZ but I gotta admit hes just taking someone's spot(?) I like most of his songs I just don't feel that he is whats good for rap.
  • Lil Wayne-Lil Wayne should be in the elite column but hes fallen off big time. He obviously doenst give a s*** so hes bad for rap right now.
  • Wiz Khalifa-I kinda like Wiz, then again I kinda don't. lol
  • Future-No Comment
  • Gucci Mane-An ok rapper who needs collabos to survive.
  • Juicy J- I kinda like his flow and swag but his lyricism leaves a lot to be desired!
The Elite
The following rappers are the best of today and arguably in the top 10 rappers all time.

  • Jay-z-What else can I say about the god-MC? Jay is almost un-comparable. But he seems to get bored with his own excellence. These days he doesn't rap like he as anything to prove. Hes kinda like the Bill Russell of rap since hes so successful. MCHG was decent but a lil disappointing.
  • Nas-Longevity, Storytelling....Nas is one of the greats of all time. I don't know what he will do next but he actually has nothing to prove IMO. His last 2 albums were excellent(Life is Good & Distant Relatives).
  • Eminem-The whjte boi is in my opinion, the best rapper overall today. I could be wrong but u know im not. Eminem makes hits and usually has hit albums. I really don't know what else to say about him other than nobody really is this talented and introspective(Cept maybe Pac)
  • Kanye West-Mr. West is one of the most Polarizing figures in rap if not the most. Kanye is willing to say what u wont say and make that beat that u thought didn't exist. All his albums are good, but most are great. From College Dropout to Yeezus. Stop hating this man is elite now.
  • Common-An elite rapper that isn't as popular as he used to be. Common has always found a way to make generally positive music and he earned my respect in 2007.
  • Talib Kweli-Another conscious MC. U cannot (let me repeat) U CANNOT overlook Talib's discography or skillz. One of the better rappers period.
  • Raekwon-A talented storyteller and gangster rapper SUPREME.
  • Ice Cube-Hes not making classics anymore but that doesn't take away from Cube's longevity In this rap music.
  • Lupe-Don't squint, Lupe is an Elite rapper....why? well 3/4 of his albums are great and lyrically only Eminem..and maybe K.Dot are worthy to be in a contest with this guy. Great creativity also.
  • Ghostface Killah-GK has a lot of good albums but his longevity cant be ignored.

Nas Albums Worst to Best

20)      Nastradamus (75)- It really shouldn’t be a surprise to see this one ranked so low. The lyricism isn’t abysmal but everything is pretty average. How does a song like “Big Girl” make it to a Nas album?? It’s just a boring album plain and simple….I don’t really have a lot to say about it. 19)          Street’s Disciple (82) -I hate having this one so low. I honestly like a lot of the songs on this double disc. Unfortunately there’s quite a bit of filler here just like with Jay-z’s Blueprint 2. Disc one has hits like “Nazareth Savage”, “American Way”, “ Just a Moment” and “ You Know My Style”. Disc 2 has some heat on it too: “Suicide Bounce”, the title track, “Virgo”, “Bridging the Gap” and “Thiefs Theme”.   18) T he Lost Tapes 2 (86) -This one I admit I haven’t heard that much…but its pretty decent. It gets off to a good start with songs like “Vernon Family” and “Jarreau of Rap (Skatt Attack)”. A lot of these songs are ok….but not muc...

Album Review: Kid Cudi-Insano (regular version)

I gotta admit I didn't like this album that much when I first heard it over half a year ago. I've heard that Kid Cudi doesn't exactly play to his strengths....that's partly true. I do like his rapping here tho. Honestly most songs here kinda blend together....."Keep Bouncin'" is really hype....and it gets the album off to a good start. "At The Party" with Pharrell Williams and Travis Scott may be my favorite song. "Wow" with A$AP Rocky is another highlight. Overall tho I feel this album tries too hard to be trendy. Cudi needed to put more of his pain into it. I mean a happy Cudi album isn't a bad thing but it really seems odd to me. You're not getting alot of singing or hums here know what I mean? However the production I found to be very good. Cudi is one of my favorite rappers like top 20 and I guess this will do for 2024. Lyrics 20 Beats 23 Depth 21 Tilt 21 Verdict 85

Album Review: Lupe Fiasco's Tetsuo & Youth

Lupe has come back, and with a classic album. He seemed to be back on tracks with Food and Liquor II, but F&L2 wasn’t as fun to listen to as his earlier albums. Even LASERS was more fun. This album however, is very complex and fun to listen to. It’s also incredibly well produced. Lupe proves he’s still a top lyricist in the game. Check out his lyrical showcase on Mural, or storytelling on  Prisoner 1 & 2. He’s got a really long song called Chopper which features a lot of guests but its all good. The last song might be the weakest which features Ab-Soul. No Scratches feat. Nikki Jean is one of my favorite songs here. The interludes are pretty intersing, but ultimately skippable. This album is already up for album of the year, and honestly it will be hard for anyone to match this effort. The verdict... its 10/10 for me. This is a great album
