In Depth Review: Marhall Mathers LP2

OP: 9.5/10

MMLP2 is a monster cd that is a sequel to Em’s best album MMLP 1.I knew, in 2013 that the album would be good. The album starts with “Bad Guy” which is actually Stan 2….Stan’s younger brother apparently kills Em. Yes very interesting. DO NOT Skip the track or you wont understand. The song has a dark and dreary beat. It is also the album’s longest track. The skit “Parking Lot” takes place right after the song “Criminal” on MMLP1. Its kinda pointless but I guess Em felt the need to do it.

The next track is really cool, “Rhyme Or Reason” has a dope beat. It’s a slow paced song with a good feature. “SO Much Better” is a good song but really its one of  my least favorites. I assume he’s talking about Kim, but idk. The verses are good but the chorus is tasteless. The end is funny b/c its what Em used to say at the end of tracks from albums past. “Survival” is a dope song. Em attacks each line with intensity. The chorus is also really cool. It was featured on COD Ghosts for you video game enthusiasts.  “Legacy” is an introspective song. It’s good but I didn’t like it at first.

“As****e” is a dope track featuring Skylar Grey. The beat just builds up…its truly epic. Em glides on the beat pretty effortlessly.  “Quit acting salty, I was countin on u to count me out, Like Asher Roth, when he shouted me out..”  Its kind of like Em saying to his peers and fans,” I’m not washed up, I’ve gone nowhere.” The next track, “Berzerk” is really good. It’s the typical party song you find on most Em albums (Real Slimshady, Loose It). This Rick Rubin track is really creative, fusing Rap with Rock…I love it.

Next up, “Rap God”, the albums best track. You have probably noticed that this album is constructed similarly to MMLP. Em displays bars here…great lyricism on a dope ass beat. The song is 6 minutes long but it never feels like it. I love the video too. “Brainless” is a cool, Relapse sounding type song. “Stronger Than I Was” might have you reaching for the skip button. Its ok, but should be 2 minutes shorter. Its basically just Em singing over lost love over and over….

Rihanna teams up with Em for “The Monster” a great introspective track. In some ways this is better than “Love the Way you lie” from Recovery. “So Far” is easily has the most references to Em’s past albums. It’s a funny track with a cool beat. “Love Game” is hit or miss. He teams up with Kendrick Lamar who does a good job with Em. The song is fast and fun. The two rap about women who did them wrong lol. Em Isn’t going to relinquish the spotlight at all.

“Headlights” is a necessary track. You know how Em is constantly dissing and blaming his mom for everything? Well here he praises his mother and says he’s sorry. The chorus is a winner, and it never comes across corny. “Evil Twin” is an interesting track. He literally just rips on people for the hell of it. Welcome back Em! “F*** Top 5, I’m top 4” he screams about his place amongst the greats.  Sarah Palin gets dissed pretty hard lol.

The bonus tracks are good. “Baby” and “Groundhog Day” sound similar. They are good songs that sound kinda Encore or Relapse style Em. “Desperation” is a good song but nothing special. I absolutely love “Beautiful Pain” featuring Sia. She does her thing on this track, and actually steals the show from Em. Last track is “Wicked Ways” featuring X Ambassadors. Its decent and at the end Ken Kaniff makes a return and man Is it funny!

Overall I feel MMLP2 falls a little short of MMLP1 but not by much. Lyrically hes got it, but the production wasn’t as good as some Em albums. Overall though it’s a win though. Its like the album Em should have came with in 2009 or 2010, but hey he had to learn what didn’t work and what did right?

Nas Albums Worst to Best

20)      Nastradamus (75)- It really shouldn’t be a surprise to see this one ranked so low. The lyricism isn’t abysmal but everything is pretty average. How does a song like “Big Girl” make it to a Nas album?? It’s just a boring album plain and simple….I don’t really have a lot to say about it. 19)          Street’s Disciple (82) -I hate having this one so low. I honestly like a lot of the songs on this double disc. Unfortunately there’s quite a bit of filler here just like with Jay-z’s Blueprint 2. Disc one has hits like “Nazareth Savage”, “American Way”, “ Just a Moment” and “ You Know My Style”. Disc 2 has some heat on it too: “Suicide Bounce”, the title track, “Virgo”, “Bridging the Gap” and “Thiefs Theme”.   18) T he Lost Tapes 2 (86) -This one I admit I haven’t heard that much…but its pretty decent. It gets off to a good start with songs like “Vernon Family” and “Jarreau of Rap (Skatt Attack)”. A lot of these songs are ok….but not muc...

Album Review: Kid Cudi-Insano (regular version)

I gotta admit I didn't like this album that much when I first heard it over half a year ago. I've heard that Kid Cudi doesn't exactly play to his strengths....that's partly true. I do like his rapping here tho. Honestly most songs here kinda blend together....."Keep Bouncin'" is really hype....and it gets the album off to a good start. "At The Party" with Pharrell Williams and Travis Scott may be my favorite song. "Wow" with A$AP Rocky is another highlight. Overall tho I feel this album tries too hard to be trendy. Cudi needed to put more of his pain into it. I mean a happy Cudi album isn't a bad thing but it really seems odd to me. You're not getting alot of singing or hums here know what I mean? However the production I found to be very good. Cudi is one of my favorite rappers like top 20 and I guess this will do for 2024. Lyrics 20 Beats 23 Depth 21 Tilt 21 Verdict 85

Album Review: Lupe Fiasco's Tetsuo & Youth

Lupe has come back, and with a classic album. He seemed to be back on tracks with Food and Liquor II, but F&L2 wasn’t as fun to listen to as his earlier albums. Even LASERS was more fun. This album however, is very complex and fun to listen to. It’s also incredibly well produced. Lupe proves he’s still a top lyricist in the game. Check out his lyrical showcase on Mural, or storytelling on  Prisoner 1 & 2. He’s got a really long song called Chopper which features a lot of guests but its all good. The last song might be the weakest which features Ab-Soul. No Scratches feat. Nikki Jean is one of my favorite songs here. The interludes are pretty intersing, but ultimately skippable. This album is already up for album of the year, and honestly it will be hard for anyone to match this effort. The verdict... its 10/10 for me. This is a great album
