My Favorite Rap Albums (Top 20)

As you know in this blog i have previously listed 50 of my favorite rap albums....but those albums werent in order. So I have made a RANKED list of my FAVORITE Rap albums. This wasnt an easy list to make. I will make a R&B list like it soon. Enjoy!

1)      Kanye West –Graduation
I've said alot about this album. Its just so much fun to listen to. It's also a very varied album, that i havent been albe to put down since i bought it in 2007. I dont think its Kanye's best album, but this isnt a best of list. This is my favorite rap album. Usually when i didnt know what to listen to, i would fall back on this album.

2)      Ludcacris- Word of Mouf
You may not know this, but this was the first rap album I ever owned. Its a lot of fun to listen to. The production is pretty good, but Luda is a clear star of the album. I think this is Luda's best album although Chicken & Beer is close. This album also has great track placement and cohesiveness.

3)      50 Cent- Get Rich or Die Tryin’
50 Cent's debut album had some hype, but most of it's success was due to quality music. There's a lot of great songs like the anthemic In Da Club. The beats are incredible and 50's displays some lyrical dexterity. A lot of the songs are really catchy. I can listen to this one without skipping a track.

4)      T.I.- King
Now I am a huge T.I. fan, and this may be his best album, but i dont think so. What it is though is really impressive for not just a dirty south album, but all rap albums period. T.I. glides through these songs with incredible ease. The album has some really dope production and lots of hits. It kind of loses steam a lil bit in the 2nd half, but T.I. claimed the throne with this one.

5)      Jay-z- Blueprint
BP1 is in the conversation for greatest rap album of all time. Jay spits fire on every song. He is assisted by some great beats also. He is only outshined on one song, Renegade, which features Eminem. Otherwise i really like this album, especially the bonus tracks that are built in after the final track.

6)      Kanye West- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
I've reviewed this masterpiece about 3 times already. I really love how Kanye DID NOT DISAPOINT with this album. Its got, i think, the most versatility you'll here on a rap album, and some of the best beats as well. Kanye doesnt leave much to be desired lyrically either with songs like Power, Monster, and Gorgeous. This album also has a high number of quality songs.....i mean everyone is for the most part.

7)      The Notorious B.I.G.- Ready to Die
Arguably the best rapper ever; Biggie's debut made me a much bigger of his. I really like the way he storytells and keeps it real when he raps. Juciy, Big Poppa, & Gimme the Loot are great songs. I prefer this album over Illmatic which didnt quite make my top 20 but is certainly a classic in its own right. Its a shame Biggie only had 2 real albums.

8)      Nas- Stillmatic
Stillmatic is Nas's attempt to top Illmatic. For the most part he succeeded in creating more varied songs. I really like Ether even though he destroys one of my favorite rappers. Nas delivers one of the better lyrical perfomances in rap on this album. I picked this over Untitled, God's Son, and Life is Good because this is the album that cemented the fact that I had become a Nas fan. After hearing this, it was hard to tell who was better between Nasty Nas and Jay Hova.

9)      Eminem- The Marshall Mathers LP
Eminem's best album cracks the top ten barely. Its a really complete album which showcases what Eminem's skill set. The Way I Am, Stan, and The Real Slimshady are some of rap's best songs. Its better than SlimShady LP in every way. After hearing this i was conviced that Eminem is "Betta than 90% of you rappers out there".

10)  Young Jeezy-Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101
This isnt really an elite album, but its one of my favorites nonetheless. Jeezy's unique ad-lib style was just what the doctor ordered. A lot of songs sound similar here, but thats true of all Jeezy's albums. "When they play that new Jeezy all the dope boyz go crazy".

11)   Kid Cudi- Man on the Moon: The End of Days
Kid Cudi's debut album is hailed as a classic by some. It is filled with introspective songs. The album may be a bit dreary for some, but i really love it. Surprisingly I didnt like this that much after a couple listens but then i got hooked. Cudi's mixture of singing and rapping works as well as any other rapper's(Ja RUle and Drake) if not better.

12)  Missy Elliot- Miss E…So Addicive
This wasnt the album that put Missy on the map, but it made her a rap superstar. The beats are incredible, and the songs are really catchy. U could argue Missy is the best female MC as this album is really good. Get Ur FREAK ON!

13)  Big Boi- Sir Luscious Left Foot: Son of Chico Dusty
This is one of the better albums i've heard from the Durtty Durrty. This album has some really catchy songs. It never seems to get old, as Big Boi spits that hot fire. Big Boi also has a good ear for beats. Be Still, Tangerine. Turns Me On, and Hustle Blood are all great songs.

14)  Lupe Fiasco- Food & Liquor
This is one of rap's gems. Lupe is the star of this album with his excellent flow. I like this album a little bit more than The Cool, even though i think thats a slightly better album. F&L 1 has better beats than that album. I dont like the long outro at the end of the album however.

15)  T.I. Paper Trail
Paper Trail wasnt really a comeback album, but it made T.I. the best rapper in the South. The album is incredible with classicas like Whaterve U Like, No Matter What, Dead and Gone, and Live Your Life. The beats are fire, but his flow is great. The guest spots are also well used. The weakest song i think is Porn Star, but even that isnt bad.

16)  Jay-z-The Black Album
Jay-z's supposed swan song album is amazing. I love the way it's constructed. I also like that hes the only rapper rapping on the album. Not too many rappers could of pulled this one off. Its i think, Jay's 2nd best album.  I suppose the best song is a toss up between Dirt off Your shoulder and 99 Problems.

17)  Kanye West- The College Dropout
Kanye's debut is one of rap's gems. The contruction is amazing, the beats are stellar, and the album is just a lot of fun to listen to. Kanye's rapping isnt the best but he was just getting started out. All Falls Down, Through the Wire, Slow Jamz, and Jesus Walks remain some of my favorite songs.

18)  Kendrick Lamar- good kid M.A.A.D. city
This album is a new favorite of mine. Kendrick spits with great dexterity here. Rarely does he rap the same. The guest spots are good too, like Drake and Pharell. Kdot is the star of the show however. This is one great westcoast album.

19)  Game- The Red Album
I like all of Game's albums, but this one is really unique to me. The beats arent all that, but Game proves he's a versatile lyricist here. I like the Dr. Dre skits too. Game really changed it up with this album. He has losts of guests as usual, but none of them steal the show this time.

20)  Eminem- The Eminem Show
The Eminem Show is one of my favorite albums because it is just so engrossing. Lyrically Em is on fire, but the production(which he did a lot of) is also impressive. I dont care much for the skits on this one, which is odd for an EMinem album. Theres only about 2 or 3 songs that arent good to great.

Nas Albums Worst to Best

20)      Nastradamus (75)- It really shouldn’t be a surprise to see this one ranked so low. The lyricism isn’t abysmal but everything is pretty average. How does a song like “Big Girl” make it to a Nas album?? It’s just a boring album plain and simple….I don’t really have a lot to say about it. 19)          Street’s Disciple (82) -I hate having this one so low. I honestly like a lot of the songs on this double disc. Unfortunately there’s quite a bit of filler here just like with Jay-z’s Blueprint 2. Disc one has hits like “Nazareth Savage”, “American Way”, “ Just a Moment” and “ You Know My Style”. Disc 2 has some heat on it too: “Suicide Bounce”, the title track, “Virgo”, “Bridging the Gap” and “Thiefs Theme”.   18) T he Lost Tapes 2 (86) -This one I admit I haven’t heard that much…but its pretty decent. It gets off to a good start with songs like “Vernon Family” and “Jarreau of Rap (Skatt Attack)”. A lot of these songs are ok….but not muc...

Album Review: Kid Cudi-Insano (regular version)

I gotta admit I didn't like this album that much when I first heard it over half a year ago. I've heard that Kid Cudi doesn't exactly play to his strengths....that's partly true. I do like his rapping here tho. Honestly most songs here kinda blend together....."Keep Bouncin'" is really hype....and it gets the album off to a good start. "At The Party" with Pharrell Williams and Travis Scott may be my favorite song. "Wow" with A$AP Rocky is another highlight. Overall tho I feel this album tries too hard to be trendy. Cudi needed to put more of his pain into it. I mean a happy Cudi album isn't a bad thing but it really seems odd to me. You're not getting alot of singing or hums here know what I mean? However the production I found to be very good. Cudi is one of my favorite rappers like top 20 and I guess this will do for 2024. Lyrics 20 Beats 23 Depth 21 Tilt 21 Verdict 85

Album Review: Lupe Fiasco's Tetsuo & Youth

Lupe has come back, and with a classic album. He seemed to be back on tracks with Food and Liquor II, but F&L2 wasn’t as fun to listen to as his earlier albums. Even LASERS was more fun. This album however, is very complex and fun to listen to. It’s also incredibly well produced. Lupe proves he’s still a top lyricist in the game. Check out his lyrical showcase on Mural, or storytelling on  Prisoner 1 & 2. He’s got a really long song called Chopper which features a lot of guests but its all good. The last song might be the weakest which features Ab-Soul. No Scratches feat. Nikki Jean is one of my favorite songs here. The interludes are pretty intersing, but ultimately skippable. This album is already up for album of the year, and honestly it will be hard for anyone to match this effort. The verdict... its 10/10 for me. This is a great album
